400 years of trade relations between the Netherlands and Japan were the reason for NLGD and Dutch Game Garden to organize The Netherlands – Japan GameJam 2008. Fifty developers had only 36 hours to create new and innovative mobile game concepts. This creative marathon resulted in a spectacular clash between Dutch and Japanese developers with Dutch Run as the fantastic result.
The Hague, April 01, 2009

The GameJam was held in the Netherlands in the spring of 2008 in collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy in Tokyo, the Netherlands Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Economic Affairs, and Dutch game organizations NLGD and Dutch Game Garden. Special 2008-2009 game advisor was Ms. Carla Hoekendijk.
In the city of Utrecht, the heart of the Netherlands, fifty developers were given 36 hours to develop mobile game concepts to celebrate 150 years of diplomatic and 400 years of trade relations between The Netherlands and Japan, respectively in 2008 and 2009. The jury consisted of game experts from Japan, The Netherlands and the United States, and unanimously praised the concepts presented by the Dutch contestants.
In addition, Khaeon, Elements Interactive and Taito Corporation have joined forces to develop “Water Ways”, an extended version of Dutch Run with extended and different functionalities for the same platform. Water Ways will be launched in April 2009.
With a long history in the creative field the Dutch are emerging to become a nation of Digital Game Creators.
