Various groups in the Utrecht area combined their powers to unite the Dutch games industry for the first time in 2005. The importance of this gathering and knowledge sharing became apparent to national and local governments. With their support, the NLGD foundation was established in 2006 with the objective to stimulate the development of the Dutch games industry.
With the successful 2007 edition in mind, it became clear that the next edition should have an international focus: the Festival of Games was born. With the addition of the match-making event Pitch & Match in 2009, the show became a worthy addition to the European playground.
The Festival of Games 2012 showed an attendance of over 1.500 (unique) business professionals. They went to a combination of the Creative Spirit Game Conference, Showcase, Pitch & Match and the Career Fair.
